Expected, Unexpected Hospital Visits

This past Sunday, we shared an update about our son, Benji, with Calvary Chapel Palm City where we summarized what has happened so far and what is coming up next for him, including details about his next major operation at the end of August. We’ve included the video below for those who want to watch it.

That was Sunday. But life with a medically needy baby can change quickly…

On Wednesday, we noticed Benji wasn’t acting quite right, and early Thursday morning, he woke up screaming with a nearly 102 fever and erratic stats. After a quick 1:00am consult with our cardiologist, we drove two hours south to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, and he was quickly admitted to the CVICU to monitor his heart and handle a nasty urinary tract infection. Thankfully, Benji is responding great to treatments! As long as the infection does not spread to his bloodstream, we should be going home in a day or two.

Here is an updated list of prayer requests, some we shared on Sunday, and some hot off the press from this week’s adventure!

  • Pray Benji continues to feed well and gains more weight before his next operation

  • Pray Benji gets healthy quickly from this UTI, and that no complications arise!

  • Pray Benji then stays healthy and doesn’t get sick again before his next operation.

  • Pray Benji has a smooth second surgery and recovery

  • Pray Edmund James, our firstborn, continues to grow and love life even as it is always changing around him

  • Pray we (Andrew and Chantelle) persevere well; we were already tired and the latest events have us even more weary in every respect, with more right around the corner

  • Pray for continued provision. Insurance has covered a lot, but Benji’s care is highly complex. We are still looking at thousands of dollars of travel and medical expenses for all the hospital and doctor’s visits.
